What MCP is, in plain terms.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for an AI app to use another app's tools. Connecting Grein gives your assistant a set of Grein tools it can call during a conversation, like reading a board or adding blocks to it.
It's useful when you'd rather work from Claude or ChatGPT: ask it to turn a conversation into a board, summarise a project, or add research to the right place.
What a connected app can do.
List, create and rename projects. Read a board, search blocks across your projects, and apply changes: create, edit, move, group and connect blocks, nest boards, and add stock media. It can also read and post in project chat.
Edits arrive live on any open canvas. A project it deletes goes to the trash, where you can restore it for 30 days.
Permissions you can see and take back.
When you connect, Grein shows which app is asking and what it wants: read access, write access, or both. Your project roles still apply, so a project you can only view stays read-only to the app too.
Connected apps can't change your account settings, export or delete your account, or create other tokens. Disconnect any app in Settings → Connections.
Connection details
- Server URL
- https://api.grein.studio/mcp
- Sign-in
- Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity connect with Grein sign-in (OAuth). Other clients use a personal access token.
- Scopes
- Read and write. Your owner, editor or viewer role in each project still applies.
- Tokens
- Stored hashed. App access lasts an hour and renews in the background; disconnecting ends it.
- Plan
- Works on any Grein account. Your assistant's usage is on your own AI subscription.
- Revoke
- Settings → Connections lists every connected app and token, each with Disconnect.
How to connect
The exact menu names vary a little between apps; the steps are the same.
- 1
Open your assistant's connector settings.
In Claude or ChatGPT, find the option to add a custom connector or MCP server. Grein's Settings → Connections links to each app's page.
- 2
Add Grein's server URL.
Paste https://api.grein.studio/mcp and save.
- 3
Sign in and allow.
Your assistant opens Grein's consent page. Check the app and the access it asks for, then allow it.
- 4
Ask it to use Grein.
Try “List my Grein projects” or “Add these notes to my research board.”
Questions, answered.
No. Dia is Grein's own assistant, inside the app, on Pro. MCP lets an assistant you already use, like Claude or ChatGPT, work with your boards from its own app.
It can reach the projects your account can reach, with the access you granted. It works on them when you ask it to in a conversation.
Create a personal access token in Settings → Connections and send it as a Bearer token to the server URL. Revoke the token there when you're done.
Create your first
board.
Start with a question or a few notes. Bring people in when it’s ready.
